Pictures of the sky are pictures of light itself. The blue sky color is not a chromatic quality of a physical plane, but the result of the refraction of light rays through the layers of the atmosphere – is the visible expression of emptiness. And the white volumes of the clouds are not opaque bodies, but rather flowing volumes of gas constantly changing. These images are virtual par excellence, and show the illusory condition of our visual perception.

The Natural Light series uses sky photographic images fragmented in strips, presented inside a series of luminous tubes. Placed vertically on the wall, side by side with an interval between them, these tubes together form a single image in its entirety. The tubular shape allows the projection of portions of the image on the wall visible through the spaces between the elements. Thus, the full view of the image is given by the light tubes and the projection on the wall.

“A contradictory relationship is established between the photographic model and its formal presentation – the cadenced repetition of the light bulbs covered with photographic fragments provide a semblance of regularity which is, however, the result of a sort of objectification of photography, whose apparent unity is the product of a manipulation of the image. Emphasized by back lighting, immateriality evokes structures of another space of representation, or of an illusionist effect within the illusion. Submitted to a serial cut, the image of the sky creates the illusion of a unit constructed by fragments of fragments and, in turn, the serialism indicates the possibility of a mental reconstruction of the continuous infinity of the heavens.” (Glória Ferreira)
